Accessorizing 101

I have a love/hate relationship with accessorizing. I find it difficult to determine how much is too much, especially since I usually go for a more minimalistic approach to dressing (ie. plain tops and bottoms). While I do think some girls are able to pull off the over-accessorized look (Rachel Zoe, Elle Macpherson) it can result in drowning out the look and making it look like your hiding behind your jewelry.

If you’re going for an overall relaxed look, I find it best to keep the jewelry simple as well. A large statement necklace can look amazing with a t-shirt but stop there, don’t pile on bangles and rings as well. Chances are, if you’re dressed casual, you’ll be doing something somewhat active and you don’t want to be uncomfortable. Trying on clothes while your shopping with your girlfriends isn’t a good time when your jewelry keeps getting caught on everything you’re trying on.

Necklaces shown above can be found at Stella & Dot, ShopBop and BaubleBar.

Stacking bracelets, bangles and watches has been on trend for a few years now. Although it can look really cute, keep in mind that it can be both restricting and annoying. I have a few “boyfriend” style watches that I LOVE. However, wearing them to work with a few bracelets…I usually take them off by lunch. It can be hard to type, drive, etc. If you wear this trend to work just keep it to a minimum. Otherwise, try it for date night or maybe brunch with your girlfriends.

Watch, bracelets and bangles can be found at Nordstrom, ShopBop, Stella & Dot, Dogeared, Neiman Marcus, and Forever 21.

Cuff-style earrings are really popular right now and I loveee them. I love statement earrings in general. I’m not a fan of statement earrings paired with statement necklaces even if they match. If you look in the mirror and you’re not sure where to focus, chances are you’ve overdone it. Once you’re happy with your ensemble, stop there!

Earrings can be found at Stella & Dot, ShopBop, Shamelessly Sparkly, Tory Burch, and ILYCouture.

The most important thing to remember when purchasing accessories is to stick to your style and color palette. If all your clothes are neutrals and you never wear bright colors, you will most likely never wear that bright pink necklace. Also, don’t spend a fortune on a trendy piece, there are a million places to buy jewelry in your price range. If there is something you’re looking for but haven’t been able to find comment below or email me, I’m happy to help!

I think my girlfriend has a really hard time and ends up spending what it feels like hours, at our local Jewelry Store in San Jose. And I ask the same question, How much is too much?
