An Easy Bedtime Skin Routine

For the longest time I did nothing for my skin except wash it (not as much as I should have) and put make up on it (more than I should have). A few years ago, this neglect began to show up BIG TIME. I broke out more than I ever did in high school and my skin looked dull. Like if I didn’t have makeup on I looked sick. It was gross.

After trying out many different brands and reading a bazillion reviews online, I’ve settled into a routine that works really well for me. Keep in mind that I’m in my mid 20’s and I have pretty normal skin now. You should always base your routine on your own age and skin type or your results won’t be what you want them to be. Ask the women at the beauty counter or Sephora and if you have one, always ask your dermatologist.

Okay, so first of all, ALWAYS wash your face. You’ve heard this forever and it’s still true. I never washed my makeup off when I was in college and it was awful. Trust me you’ll feel better waking up in the morning and looking in the mirror to a fresh face than a mascara monster. Plus, once you start washing your face every night you will start to see the difference in your skin in just a few weeks. I use Chanel Le Blanc cream cleanser in the winter because I like the moisturizing creaminess of it, but if you have oily skin you might want to try something else.

I follow up with an eye make up remover because I typically apply several coats of mascara so I want to be sure to remove it all. Your lashes are extra brittle when they’re coated in mascara so removing everything keeps them from breaking off. I use Lancome because it comes off in one swipe so the bottle lasts for weeks.

After removing the dirt and grime of the day I apply a Vitamin C serum (I use this one by Auriga). I leave this on for about 20 minutes before applying anything else. You want to be careful about applying multiple serums and creams one after another because they can oxidize and deactivate each other and all kinds of scientific crap you’ll have to research because I am neither a doctor nor a scientist and I don’t want anyone to sue me. Actually you should listen to The Beauty Brains podcast when you’re driving and you’ll learn all kinds of wonderful things.

The last thing I apply to my face before bed is a thick moisturizer and eye cream. I use Elizabeth Arden because they work well, smell great anddddd you can buy them at TJ Maxx. I’m not joking, you will save a FORTUNE. It’s fantastic.

For body cream I apply Philosophy Living Grace like it’s going out of style. It is the perfect consistency and it smells amazing. It’s a little pricey for body cream but the pot goes a long way and the packaging is beautiful.

My grandmother bought me the COOLEST pillowcase for Christmas from Neiman Marcus. This is going to sound ridiculous but just bear with me for a minute. This Iluminage pillowcase has fibers embedded with Copper Oxide proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The pillowcase is also super soft.

I also use a sleep mask religiously. The black mask shown here was purchased on Etsy. One side is cashmere and the other is leather. With all the phone lights, tv, street lights, etc. it’s very hard for me to fall asleep sometimes. I started using a sleep mask about a year ago and I can’t fall asleep without one. Just remember to set an alarm because the sun will not wake you up!
